A history of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their Raw brand. It is one of two world titles in WWE, alongside the WWE Universal Championship that was created for the SmackDown brand as a result of the 2016 Brand Extension. The current champion is Brock Lesnar, who is in his first reign.

The title was introduced in 1963 by the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) as the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, following the promotion seceding from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers, who won a tournament to claim the title and became the first widely recognized WWWF Champion. Since its inception, three different wrestlers have had five or more reigns as champion: Hulk Hogan (six), Bruno Sammartino (seven) and Bob Backlund (five). Of these three men, Bruno Sammartino holds two notable distinctions: he is both the longest combined reigning champion at 11 years and 4 days and he has held the championship for more combined days than anyone else at 5183.

Inaugural champion Buddy Rogers held it for only 13 days due to controversial political situations involving rival promoters which resulted in him being stripped of his title by The WWWF Board of Directors on January 24, 1963. On April 30, 1971 The WWWF changed its name to “World Wide Wrestling Federation” after it gained control over territories outside of New York which it now promoted under different names such as Georgia Championship Wrestling and Big Time Wrestling.
