The title was introduced on October 20, 2002 at WWE No Mercy during a match between then-WWE Undisputed Champion Brock Lesnar and The Rock, who had won the 2002 Royal Rumble; after Lesnar pinned The Rock to win both titles, the Undisputed Championship was retired and replaced with the World Heavyweight Championship as WWE’s primary world championship.

The inaugural champion was Brock Lesnar, who won the title by defeating The Rock at No Mercy. Upon its introduction into UFC, competitor Lashley became the second person to be recognized as champion under both promotions.

The most title defenses of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of two world titles for WWE’s main roster, as distinguished from their developmental territories NXT and NXT UK. The current champion is Brock Lesnar, who is in his first reign.

The inaugural champion was crowned in 1963 as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Champion, and renamed in 1979 as the WWF World Heavyweight Champion. The title was then vacant for a period of time following the 2001 “InVasion” arc until it was relaunched in 2002 as the WWE Undisputed Championship, finally unifying the WWF Championship, WWF Intercontinental Championship, and WWF Tag Team Championship (which became extinct). It then became exclusive to SmackDown in August 2002 when Raw seceded from WWE due to the Brand Extension. In May 2005, after WWE established its sixth brand extension, it split both its original world titles into separate championships for each brand; thus East Coast-based Raw created and unrecognized lineage of championship while West Coast-based SmackDown created its own lineage. This resulted in two active world champions: John Cena held the original championship while Batista held the newly created WWE World Heavyweight Championship. As a result of this split, both champions began co-existing on both brands due to having been drafted to that show by WWE’s authoritative figures (Raw’s General Manager Eric Bischoff and SmackDown’s General Manager Theodore Long respectively), thereby making them appear on both brands until June 2006 when Cena was drafted to Raw while Batista was drafted to SmackDown during that year’s Draft Lottery. He then defended it against Raw’s Edge at Judgment Day, thus unifying both titles into one; however rather than keep one name or another, it kept its Undisputed name as a reminder of how it became unified with Edge losing his Raw title to Cena(as Edge held both titles at once).
