Chyna’s early life and her time in WWE
Chyna was born in Rochester, New York, on December 27, 1969, and later moved to New York City. Her father, Joseph R. Laurer Sr., was a Vietnam War veteran of French and Irish descent, and her mother, Janice (née Steinmetz), is of Welsh descent. Laurer described her childhood as “rough”, further noting that she was raised in a lower-middle-class environment. As a child growing up on Buffalo’s East Side (which she later referred to as a ” ghetto”), Laurer initially did not engage in sports because she feared it might hurt her brother, who played football for his high school. She began participating in backyard wrestling at 13 after watching her brother train with his friends; because of this interest, she bought wrestling videotapes from TV promotions such as the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW). She dropped out of the ninth grade when she began attending Martin Luther King Jr. High School for the Visual and Performing Arts where she studied drama instead.
