WWE Survivor Series 2021 – history

The WWE Survivor Series is an annual professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event held in November by WWE. It is the second longest running PPV event in WWE history (behind WWE’s flagship event, WrestleMania), and is considered one of the “Big Four” shows, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and SummerSlam.

The first Survivor Series was held in 1987 and was created as a response to the success of rival promotion World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade event. The concept of the show was to have a series of team matches pitting wrestlers from different promotions against each other. The 1987 event featured five matches between wrestlers from WWF, AWA, Memphis Wrestling, Mid-South Wrestling, and Jim Crockett Promotions. WWF wrestlers won four out of the five matches on the card.

In 1988, WWF took full control over Survivor Series and has operated it ever since. The concept of the show then changed to feature only four matches between random teams of wrestlers from any brand within WWF. This format lasted until 2001 when the show began featuring only two traditional Survivor Series elimination tag team matches. In 2005, WWE began featuring only one traditional Survivor Series elimination tag team match as its main event (with other traditional tag team Elimination matches being relegated to the undercard).

Since 2015, every edition of Survivor Series has been branded as a co-brand exclusive pay-per-view (meaning that it features card predominately composed of matchups between superstars from Raw and SmackDown).

WWE Survivor Series 2021 will be taking place on November 21st at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
