“We have an entire team of carpenters and welders here at the Performance Center that actually construct all of our steel cages, ring posts and ladders,” he said. “For the ladders specifically, they start with two-inch by two-inch square tubing. They cut it to length based on whatever size ladder we need for a particular match or TV show.”

“Once it’s cut to length, they then take that tubing and they roll form it into what we call an ‘I-beam.’ An I-beam is just a basic shape that gives [the ladder] more stiffness from top to bottom so it doesn’t want to bend as much,” Pritchard continued. “Once they roll form it into that I-beam shape, they then weld cross braces onto it going side to side so now you have this I-beam shape that has cross bracing going side to side. That gives it even more stiffness so when guys are climbing up and down on it, and putting all their weight on different parts of the ladder, it doesn’t want to bend or twist.”

“After they weld those cross braces on, they then put gussets in all four corners,” Pritchard said. “Gussets are just little metal plates that help reinforce all four corners so when guys are leaning the ladder against the ring ropes and pulling on it from different angles, those gussets help keep everything together.”

“Once all of those pieces are in place, they then weld footplates onto the bottom so the ladder can stand flat on the ground,” he continued. “And then finally, they put handrails on both sides near the top so guys can grab onto something when they’re climbing up.”

Pritchard concluded by saying that while there are different types of ladders used in WWE – such as singletside or wordsided – each one is made out of aluminum and constructed using the same basic process outlined above.
